How To Understand Designers
DESIGNER SAY “WHAT”? (or how to understand an interior designer)
Once you’ve decided on the perfect design partner, do you know the single most important step in making that relationship one of the best that will result in your design dreams coming true?
COMMUNICATE!!! COMMUNICATE!!! COMMUNICATE!!!!
Don’t hold back! Ask questions – lots of questions. Share your design ideas, your inspirations, your “always wanted to have’s”.
Write those ideas down, draw them on a napkin, rip images out of home decor magazines, sculpt them in play-doh – any way you want share them will be fine.
Even if what you want is an interior designer that leaves you alone and goes off and creates something brilliant – ‘cause you just LOVE surprises – how will they know to do just that if you don’t tell them?
ABRACADABRA!
If you’re working with a good designer your contributions will inspire and ignite. Your interior designer will make design magic happen mixing their talent with your inner most wishes.
IT’S FOR EVERYONE!
This communication thing isn’t just for clients. Your designer should be communicating right back at you, asking you questions, getting to know you and your interior design goals, how you want your home to look, feel and work, checking with you on a regular basis.
HUH?
Every industry has it’s own “speak” – it’s own way of describing and labeling things and the world of interior design is no different. Because this creates some confusion, I’ve put together a guide for you. At the bottom of this blog, sign up to get our Design Speak Cheat Sheet This will come in handy when your designer says one thing you are thinking quite another – like she says “scale” and you think “gotta cut out those cookies”.
Relationships are important. Working with a design professional that’s right for you- someone that “gets” you – is the key to a successful and enjoyable design project and some very happy people!
As always, we look forward to hearing from you!
